What is creatine monohydrate?

Creatine monohydrate is a naturally occurring amino acid that is converted into creatine phosphate (or phosphocreatine) in the body. Creatine phosphate helps to synthesize the energy-bearing molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP provides the energy for all muscle contractions.

Creatine monohydrate is the most widely studied form of creatine and the one with the most consistent results.

Creatine monohydrate benefits

The human body can produce creatine endogenously from other amino acids. However, several scientific studies have demonstrated that muscle cells can store a larger amount of creatine than that produced by the body or consumed through diet (*1), (*2)

That's why creatine supplementation may be beneficial to athletes desiring to improve their sports performance. Creatine increases muscle phosphocreatine content and so rapidly increases energy levels (*3). It is common wisdom that most professional athletes supplement with creatine.

Its effects are more noticeable at the anaerobic level(short duration, high intensity activities), such as weight lifting, sprints,high jump and powerlifting.

Here's a summary of some of the main benefits of creatine supplementation:

-> Increases muscle mass and strength (*4)

-> Increases energy levels required for muscle contraction (*5)

-> Increases cell volume and promotes muscle protein synthesis (*6), (*7)

-> Accelerates recovery between workouts (*8), (*9)

-> Improves both aerobic and anaerobic systems (*10),(*11)

-> Increases mental awareness (*12)

How to take creatine monohydrate?

Creatine can be taken with both water and juice. It's the position stand of the International Society of Sports Nutrition that combining creatine and a high dosage of fast-acting carbohydrates can increase creatine absorption by muscle cells (*13).

Fast-acting carbohydrates will induce an insulin spike,thus allowing the creatine to get into the muscles faster. Research shows that alpha lipoic acid can have the same insulin spike effect and can therefore bean alternative to carbohydrates (*14).
