What is whey protein?

Whey protein is regarded as the cornerstone of supplementation. It's separated during the processing of turning milk into cheese.

Protein can be found in a wide variety of foods such as dairy products, soybeans, vegetables, cow, chicken and fish. However, none of these sources compares to the quality and bioavailability of whey protein (*1). Whey protein has large amounts of branched chain amino acids (BCAA), essential amino acids for growth and muscle repair.

Whey protein benefits

Whey protein provides the body with the amino acids it needs to repair and grow muscle tissue. Compared with other protein sources, whey contains the optimal combination of essential amino acids to support all the body's functions, including muscle growth (*2).

Research shows supplementation with whey protein increases cellular and hormonal responses in the body, therefore maximizing muscle growth (*3). Furthermore, whey also plays an important role on the maintenance of the immune system by contributing to both glutathione and antibodies production.

Do I need protein? How much protein?

Everybody needs protein for cell repair, maintenance and growth. The organism is constantly requiring amino acids to its key processes. However, people who practice sports regularly have a greater demand for protein (*4), as exercise causes micro-tears to muscle fibers.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has the following guidelines for protein intake (*5):

- 1,2 g to 1.4 g protein per kg / day (for resistance training)

- 1.6 to 1.7 g protein per kg / day (for strength training)

How to take - With water or milk?

Whey protein shakes can be mixed with both water and milk. The main aspect is the absorption rate. Protein's digestion and absorption will be slower if you mix your powder with milk as it contains fat.It will also be more caloric. For faster absorption it's best to mix your protein powder with water.

Before or after workout?

Whey protein shakes are generally consumed after workouts to take advantage of the 'anabolic window', a period when the body is hungry for nutrients. However, research shows that having a protein shake before workout can have the same benefits as well (*6).
