Rich and indulgent, this delicious drink is literally brimming with chocolatey flavour and plenty of protein.

The trick to keeping it the perfect consistency is to shake up the protein and milk first, then heat gently and gradually, all the while whisking. If you like it thick, add a little more corn flour to the mix.

I think it’s safe to say that a fair few people don’t like clumps in their hot drinks.

I’m not judging if you do… but to avoid getting clumps in your hot chocolate, simply blend and pulse all your ingredients together and when you’re heating your blended mixture, make sure to whisk continuously.

How Do I Prevent My Hot Chocolate from Being Too Thick?

As delicious as it tastes, whey protein can be quite thick when it comes to making a hot chocolate. If you make sure that you constantly whisk even when pouring into a cup ready to serve, your mixture should have a good consistency.

Everyone should be able to try this tasty treat. To make it animal product-free, use plant-based milk and protein powder.

What’s Better to Use, Water or Milk?

It all comes down to personal preference — milk gives you a thick and creamy texture whereas water gives you a thinner consistency. Personally, I choose milk every time.

Does Hot Chocolate Contain Any Caffeine?

Chocolate does contain a small amount of caffeine but nowhere near as much as coffee or energy drinks. So unfortunately, a cup of hot chocolate won’t give you the pre-workout boost you might want, unless you’re highly sensitive to caffeine.

Prep time:  2 minutes

Cook time:  5 minutes

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. First, add the whey protein and milk to a shaker and shake until smooth and lump-free. 

  2. Transfer your protein shake to saucepanthen add cocoa powder and corn flour and whisk to combine. Then add the orange zest and a pinch of salt, and whisk again. 

  3. Start heating the pan very gently on a low-medium heat and constantly whisk the hot chocolate whilst cooking. Be careful not to overheat, as the mixture can burn very easily and become lumpy. Heat for around 3-4 minutes, until thickened. 

  4. Serve immediately and top with light whipped cream.
